Rhythm & Blues

Course: DES115 Letterforms & Typography

Project Type: Editorial Publication

Tools: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Rhythm & Blues is an 8” x 5.5” zine publication that details the history of R&B from its roots to contemporary R&B musicians.

The Goal: The design challenge was to create a publication based on a word. For my word, I chose rhythm and eventually made it about R&B. I explored how typography can tell a story not just in a written way, but also in a visual way.

All of my projects start with brainstorming or research. For this particular project, I chose to do a mind map to help me generate a topic for my zine—which eventually led me to go with R&B

These cover design explorations helped me decide what look, feel, and vibe I want my zine to express. The top left and bottom righ ultimately became the foundation of the cover design.

The main color for this zine is blue to callback to the ‘blues’ part of R&B. But the different shades callback to the plurality of the genre.

The flowy and wavy shapes and lines—such as these—in different shades of blue became the main visual motifs for R&B in my zine.
